This varietal started making a comeback in 1990 after having nearly been wiped out during the great wine blight of the mid-1800s - that's more than a century of teetering on the edge of extinction! Part of this is due to how immensely difficult it is to grow the grape successfully, as a low yield variety that is prone to disease doesn't exactly guarantee a stable harvest. The grapes themselves are small and thick skinned, making for a fiddly fermentation process, and there are several opportunities for mistakes along the way. It's a difficult grape, but it's worth it! The truly unique nature of this complex, full bodied white wine is defined by its intensely aromatic nose, typically a lush medley of stone fruit - nectarines, peaches, apricots. Our winemaker calls it "a red wine drinker's white wine" and rightly so, considering its complexity. This vintage has really outdone itself, earning Best in Class in the Seattle Wine Awards! Excellent paired with Dungeness crab or roasted chicken.
